Mathew is a chartered accountant, graduating from Otago University in 2009. Starting out in a Dunedin public practice firm in 2010 and moving over to Cook North and Wong Limited in 2020. Mathew became a director of Cook North and Wong Limited in 2025.

Mathew is the treasurer of the Dunedin Amenities Society, currently on the committee of the Dunedin Club and Mainland Sprintcar Association.

In his spare time, Mathew will likely be found at one of the various Speedways around the countryside racing his Sprintcar.
